The SNUG project was built through a sustained, collaborative process with members of the Swadlincote Asperger’s Society. Over several months, participants worked closely with the lead artist to explore personal themes of identity, comfort, and sensory experience. Through conversation, photography, and creative experimentation, the group developed visual motifs drawn from their own interests and lived realities. These became bespoke fabrics, which the participants then helped transform into hand-crafted weighted quilts.
The artworks created through this process formed the basis of an immersive installation for an exhibition at the Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton upon Trent. Designed collectively, the exhibition celebrated the group’s achievements while offering space for the public to encounter neurodivergent perspectives on rest, care, and safety. By shaping both the artworks and the environment in which they were shown, participants ensured that the exhibition reflected their voices, priorities, and creative autonomy.
